In hartverovrend achtelooze houding lag
How I recall that day! In an entrancing pose
Of splendid casualness your tall fine figure lay
Reclining on the moss while all the others chose
To stroll the woods. It was a suffocating day.
You held my water bottle to your ruby lips,
From laughing dry. Profoundly pleasantly, as when
The vesper bell sounds through the vale, with every sip
Your sweet throat softly bobbed again and then again.
Meanwhile I picturesquely leaned against a tree
Some thousand years of age and asked myself what seems
To be the taste of fate, giving a flask for free
What my poor poet’s mouth only enjoyed in dreams.
Were only fate not cursed with cold sense but with good
Warm sentiments as well, your plumpish hands perhaps
Would then have hurled the empty bottle through the woods
And put upon my mouth your burning lips.
Now, though, you just emptied the bottle, unaware
That its contents were rather heady, - ‘t was strong beer, -
And closed your drowsy eyes and slept without a care.
Never in one day have I shed so many tears.
