Mindscapes are a term for battles which take place not between two individuals meeting each other with steel and blood, but instead battles which take place in the mind - completely separate from the outside world. These battles are often just as risky as regular combat, not leaving the target's life in danger typically but instead leaving other aspects of them vulnerable.
There are different Mindscapes which exist; Mental, Digital, and Magical.
Mental Mindscapes take place within the minds of the individuals involved. This is typically through either psychic magic, or a powerful being initiating one forcibly with an opponent.
Digital Mindscapes are the easiest to access for those entering within lands with immense technology (such as Heion). These take place in the digital realm of the internet, and do not involve much risk to the individuals if any. Instead, the hardware being used is at risk in a "hacking battle" of sorts.
Magical Mindscapes involve two individuals and their very spirits battling one another. Magical Mindscapes are typically only initiated by an outside force such as a harmful entity attempting to take control of an individual's body by winning a Mindscape and suppressing the host's soul.
Mindscapes do not use the same actions as regular combat, individuals are not physically on the field battling and thus combat maps are not needed.
In a Mindscape, roll the attack to determine the damage being dealt. Divide this damage by the opponent's (Mental, Digital, or Magical) Soak and then the remaining number is subtracted from the opponent's (Mental, Digital, or Magical) HP.
Mental Mindscape
Mental Mindscapes test the mettle of the individual's mind, and how capable they are when it comes to dealing with threats which could take over their mind or in some cases if an individual wishes to tire their opponent's mind out rather than fight them in a deadly duel. These nonlethal duels are typically done through a court setting, and differ from a Duel of Wits in that they do not involve wordsmithing and slinging insults, but instead involve one mind trying to overpower the other.
Initiative is rolled using Smarts as opposed to Agility.
Attacking in a Mental Mindscape involves the following roll: (Smarts) k (1/2 Smarts) + (1/2 Level)
For example: a Level 8 character with 6 Smarts rolls 6k3+4.
These attacks are made against an amount of Mental HP possessed by each target equal to the following: (Level + Smarts).
Mental Soak is equal to your Smarts - 2 (minimum of 1).
Upon reaching 0 Mental HP, the individuals involved are shunted back to reality. The loser immediately has a choice; lose all of their Stress and take a number of Sanity damage equal to your Smarts, or fall unconscious for 1 hour per point of Smarts you have.
Digital Mindscape
Interacting in cyberspace is typically safe, and individuals do not need to worry about engaging in any sort of combat. This is usually handled by Anti-Virus software for them, however some savvy individuals take the fight directly to the attackers themselves. Use this rule for either an Anti-Virus defending a user, or the user doing this themselves.
Initiative is rolled using Smarts as opposed to Agility.
Attacking in a Digital Mindscape involves the following roll: (Smarts) k (1/2 Smarts) + (Use Computers bonus)
For example: a Level 5 character with 8 Smarts and a +2 miscellaneous bonus to Use Computers rolls 8k4+7.
These attacks are made against an amount of Digital HP possessed by each target equal to the following: (Level + Use Computers bonus)
Digital Soak is equal to your Smarts - 2 (minimum of 1).
Upon reaching 0 Digital HP, the attacker has the choice to do one of the following actions against the target; destroy their machine, steal important data, take down the internet and power in that person's city. (This last one is risky, and can involve legal action if caution is not taken).
Magical Mindscape
Usually involving a battle for an individual's soul either due to invaders, viruses which afflict one's spirit, or even just greedy individuals looking to steal another's power, Magical Mindscapes are most often fought by deities, demi-gods, and high-ranking mages in mage college.
Initiative is rolled using Magic as opposed to Agility.
Attacking in a Magical Mindscape involves the following roll: (Magic) k (1/2 Magic) + (1/2 Level)
For example: a Level 6 character with 8 Magic rolls 8k4+6.
These attacks are made against an amount of Magical HP possessed by each target equal to the following: (Level + Resistance).
Mental Soak is equal to your Resistance - 2 (minimum of 1).
Upon reaching 0 Magical HP, the target's soul is destroyed, reducing their Resistance score down to 0. Due to this, they begin to fade and take 1d5 rounds before they are completely erased from reality and the annals of time...nobody will remember them except for those who weren't slain.
