Howling at Kurtos is an adventure designed for level 1 PCs, and intended to be an introduction to the system for new players and GMs!
Campaign Blurb:
"Deep within the forests of Rihilig lies a small town known as Kurtos, a region bordering the once thriving nation of Kyukeisho. Being in a relatively poor part of the country for agriculture, the town's population is small - consisting mostly of older couples and a few scattered young workers. Their life is slow, bland, and forgettable...until they started hearing a haunting howling in the woods."
This campaign is meant to be run with between 3 - 5 characters. Below are a list of recommended backgrounds for PCs joining the game. They are free to pick from them, or make their own entirely. These backgrounds however can help tie them closer to the events about to unfold.
Haunted: Your dreams have been becoming increasingly darker since you've come to Kurtos...each night you wake up in a cold sweat, trying to shake the feeling that you were on the cusp of a grand revelation before being awoken. Each night it worsens, yet you only feel farther from the answers you seek in your dreams.
Guardsman: As one of the town guards for Kurtos, your job has been pretty boring. Crime rarely if ever happens around these parts, and instead you're regarded more as a peaceful presence than any sort of authority figure. It makes those in the town feel safe, even if it's barely necessary. Despite this, you've been yearning for something more. And this recent incident has made a good opportunity to prove yourself.
Travelling: You and a group were travelling through the region and stopped in Kurtos to resupply. In the midst of resupplying however, news reached the travelling group - and soon after to you - that there have been strange incidents involved in the woods. Not only leaving the town at risk, but attempting to leave may only yield a worse fate for you and your group than sticking together...
Amnesia: You know exactly who you are, but there's something nagging at you. You woke up a few days ago as if an entire block of time from your life is suddenly missing from your mind. It's certainly not as simple as getting black-out drunk either, this time period is long. Weeks, maybe even months have gone by with fragments appearing and disappearing, as if you've been living your life through snippets.
It has been one month since the howling has officially started within Kurtos. Townsfolk thought the howl sounded like that of a foreign animal, a mixture of a howling wolf and a roaring bear echoes far and wide. It is then followed by a rhythmic clicking before abruptly stopping. This goes on and on, week after week. Those living within the town are too frightened to leave, traders who would normally leave have come back either injured or terrified for their lives. So far, the only casualties have been relegated to the livestock as gradually - the sheep and cattle are turning up dead. Picked completely clean, down to the bone.
