Welcome to 2nd Grade! Here is some handy information as we begin our new school year 2019-2020.

Please stay up-to-date by visiting this class webpage often for weekly class news, spelling and vocabulary words, upcoming test and project information, events, homework, etc.

Room 4 Specials Schedule:

Monday P.E. and Music

Tuesday Library

Wednesday Art and P.E.

Thursday Library and Music

Friday Spanish

I usually assign a small amount of homework Monday-Thursday. It should not require more than 15-30 minutes of your child's time, and most should be able to complete it independently or with minimal help. 2nd graders are learning to be responsible for writing down daily homework assignments in their Assignment Notebook, bringing home needed materials, and returning them the next day. Please help your child create good work habits, look over their work as needed, and help them remember repack it in their folder.

Assignment Notebooks are $5 and will last through the school year. Please send money in a labeled envelope with their name so that they can begin writing down important information as needed.

Lunch and recess begin at 11:03 each day. Because we have the early lunch period, we do not have a designated snack time, which they may be used to from previous years. Students are encouraged to bring a non-spill water bottle to keep near their desk during these hot early days of school. Please do not send juices, tea, pop, etc except with their lunches. Weather-permitting, we go outside for recess for at least 15-20 minutes daily, so when it begins to cool, please send appropriate outerwear.

Your child is welcome, but not obligated, to celebrate their birthday by sharing treats with their classmates. For summer birthdays when we are not in school, you may choose a date either in September or May to celebrate. An alternative to food is to donate a book to our class library, which your child can help read to the class! If you choose to send a food treat, please keep in mind that we have students with nut allergies, so birthday treats should be labeled nut free.

Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines Day are times for classroom celebration and it is always nice to have volunteers to help plan and run our parties. If you are Virtus-trained, have turned in your CANTS form (this needs to be done annually,) and are interested in volunteering, please let me know when these holidays approach. Thanks!

Soon I will send home login credentials for you and your child to access our Reading, Math, and Science eTexts. Please keep this information handy when you receive it so you can take advantage of many resources and your child can complete digital homework assignments if we have eLearning days this year.

We will also be using a digital math resource app called Mathletics in school and at home. More information on this to come.

It is going to be a great year. I'm looking forward to meeting you and partnering in your child's education. Please feel free to email, call, or send a handwritten note with any questions or concerns you may have this year.

All the best,

Mrs. Lisa O'Connell
