In English, we are studying nouns, but I will continue to circle back and revieew proper sentence structure, because many need the practice. I'm still seeing incomplete ideas, no capital letters, and no punctuation in a lot of student work. If you notice this in their work at home, please reinforce good sentence writing with your child.
In Math, our new Topic is Fluently Adding Within 100. We will practice addition using partial sums, use models to add 2-digit numbers and be able to explain our work, and begin using the standard algorithm for 2-digit addition. Weekly timed quizzes show progress with basic fact mastery. They will need this mastery as they begin to solve more complex addition and subtraction problems, so please continue to encourage practice at home. As a reminder, if your child is struggling to complete their math homework independently, you can go over the example problem at the top of every homework page with them to remind them what we learned and practiced at school. If they seem really lost, even with your help, please jot me a little note on their homework. Thanks.
In Science, we are studying Matter. We have begun learning about the different states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas - and in this coming week we will learn some ways that matter can change.
In Religion, we are beginning our second unit, We Ask God's Forgiveness, and will begin preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
During our penmanship lessons, we are doing some extra practice in manuscript writing and I hope to begin to teach cursive writing soon. The kids are really looking forward to it.
Last week you received a Progress Report, which is merely a snapshot of your child's work through the beginning of October. If you haven't already, please sign and return it.
One last reminder --- students were assigned a small amount of Spanish homework to complete over the weekend. I am told that they need their index cards to complete it, but don't really know what the assignment is.
