Post date: Oct 9, 2020 3:46:08 PM

Enjoy the holiday on Monday, 10/12 -- no school!

After almost a week of review, we completed our Reading Unit 1 Benchmark assessment and I'll send the results home soon.

On Wednesday, students may dress down in pink or their Linus Conquers Cancer shirts if they donate $1. The NJHS will donate proceeds raised to the American Cancer Association.

This week we begin our second literacy unit with a focus on r-controlled vowels spelled ar, or, ore, and oar. Spelling words for Friday's test are:

hard

born

horse

before

more

smart

farm

porch

corn

chore

score

part

pull

break

Selection Vocabulary words to know from this week's main selection Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends are: brave, slipped, collar

We will also practice the high frequency (sight) words: break, family, heard, listen, once, pull

Our comprehension focus this week is on cause and effect.

In English we are beginning a new Chapter on Nouns.

We will be completing Topic 3: Add Within 100 Using Strategies in Math this week. Students have learned how to use an open number line, break apart numbers into their place value parts, and use compensation to help them add 2-digit numbers mentally over the past couple of weeks. We should be ready for an assessment by the end of the week.

Our Social Studies lessons have been focused on Elections. We will continue to learn what it takes to become President of the United States for another week or two with some election-based activities, before we dive into Chapter 1 in our Social Studies textbook.

We have started Unit 2 in our Religion text, Blest Are We. These next 4 chapters 5-8 in our text emphasize forgiveness and will help us prepare the children to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are also having discussions in our classroom about mercy and kindness to others.

I will be posting occasional homework assignments through Google Classroom but will always have the students note it in their Assignment Notebooks when I do. Students should be spending about an hour a week on their i-Ready lessons for Reading and Math now that they have finished the diagnostic assessment. The work assigned to them is specific to their learning needs.

Independent reading at home and practicing basic addition and subtraction facts is hopefully a habit by now and will help your child's skills grow and develop.
