News for the week of April 16-20

Post date: Apr 13, 2018 8:34:34 PM

Students: Happy Aspire week! We will begin standardized testing on Tuesday, 4/17 and finish on Friday, 4/20. Testing takes place first thing each morning and lasts for about an hour each day. Please be sure to come to school well-rested and well-fed. Don't be late! You should have at least two sharpened #2 pencils for each day. No mechanical pencils will be allowed.

Please do not be worried about the tests. They are simply a snapshot of your learning so far, and don't indicate everything you know or how successful you are as a student. Of course, you should always take your time and do the very best that you can.

For Reading this week, our main selection is Jalapeno Bagels. Vocabulary words from this story are:

bakery, batch, boils, braided, dough, ingredients, mixture

We will be working with the vowel patterns ei and eigh this week. Here are this week's spelling words:

ceiling

neighbor

either

eighteen

height

neither

weight

leisure

protein

freight

receive

weigh

deceive

sleigh

conceited

receipt

eightieth

neighborly

deceitful

featherweight

In English, we have completed our study of Adjectives, and will begin learning more about Adverbs. Please encourage your child to read and follow all the directions as they complete their homework. As they become more independent in their work, it is important that they look it over themselves to make sure they have actually completed it according to the instructions. I have told the class that I will no longer send home work to be redone simply because they neglected to follow the directions.

In Math, we have finished an exploration of Area and Perimeter and spent some time reviewing for the Aspire tests. You may have seen some of the review packets that were sent home after we completed them here at school. We are getting ready to begin multiplying greater numbers! Your kids have learned a great deal of math this year!

In Social Studies, we are learning about places where communities start and will then begin exploring communities past and present. On May 9, we will visit Naper Settlement in Naperville, Illinois on a "time travel" field trip that lets us experience life in this area during the 19th and early 20th centuries. A permission form was sent home on Friday, 4/13. Please return the completed form with payment no later than April 30. This field trip has become a wonderful 3rd grade tradition at St. Linus School and the kids have a blast.

Keep an eye out for important information about an exciting 3rd grade social studies project - History Comes Alive! We will be presenting a "living wax museum" for parents and other St. Linus Students. Details coming soon!
