Post date: Oct 31, 2019 5:14:35 PM

This week in Reading our main selection is a folktale called One Good Turn Deserves Another. Vocabulary words to know from the selection are: groaned, creature, armadillo, snorted, grateful

In Phonics and Spelling we are focused on vowel patterns a, ai, and ay, with the long a sound. Spelling words to know are:

main

away

brain

today

wait

play

paint

tray

say

raise

stay

tail

everybody

sorry

In Math we are beginning Topic 5: Subtract Within 100 Using Strategies. This week we will learn to subtract 2-digit numbers using a hundred chart, by counting back on an open number line, and by adding up using an open number line.

Please continue to support your child as they practice their basic addition and subtraction facts, as having them memorized will help them to precisely solve more complex problems.

Mathletics.com assignments will continue to be posted and should be completed at home. We have started a Mathletics Wall of Fame to hold our certificates out in the hallway, and we are striving to earn more points than the 4th graders, who are a little bit ahead of us currently!

In Science this week we will be reviewing for our first Chapter Test, probably on Thursday or Friday, but I'll keep you posted.

In Religion we are learning about the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation as we prepare for our students to receive this Sacrament for the first time very soon. I will be sending home a copy of the Act of Contrition prayer for students to learn, and we will practice in class as well.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR, which begins this weekend in the red tile vestibule. Times for families to visit the Book Fair together are:

Saturday, 11/2 from 3-6 pm

Sunday, 11/3 from 8:30 am -1:30 pm

Monday, 11/4 from 6-8:30 pm

We are previewing the Fair together as a class on Friday, 11/1 and your child will come home with a Wish List. We will return together to the Fair on Monday to make purchases, so if you don't have a chance to visit the Fair over the weekend, you may send your child to school with their money to buy their top choices. Please remember to add sales tax to the purchase prices they wrote on their wish list.

Thanks to the parents who volunteered their time and supplied our class with Halloween treats and fun on Thursday!
