Happy St. Linus Spirit Week!
Although Halloween is being celebrated a little differently this year due to Covid-19 safety concerns, we are still having fun!
Monday is Superhero Day - wear something that shows us who your favorite Superhero is (no costumes, please.)
Tuesday is Sports Day - wear your favorite sports jersey or sport wear.
Wednesday is Decades Day - dress in something from your favorite decade.
Thursday is Pajama Day - wear your favorite jammies to school (with gym shoes, please.)
Friday is Halloween Dress Down and Celebration Day!
All grades can wear a costume OR choose to wear orange or black. No over the head costume masks are allowed and all must wear a Covid-protecting face mask, as usual.
Please do not send Halloween treats to pass out to classmates. We will have a low-key celebration in class with fun activities and goodies to bring home provided by our Fabulous FTC. THANK YOU FTC!
Weather permitting, there will be a Halloween costume parade OUTDOORS shortly after morning arrival. You are welcome to stay and watch the parade in the morning.
Our Spelling and Phonics focus this week is on the r-controlled (bossy r) er, ir, ur. Spelling words for this week's test are:
person
turn
curb
purse
nurse
birth
curl
turtle
dirt
serve
skirt
her
whole
enough
Our main selection in Reading is Scarcity. Vocabulary words to know from this selection are: hurricanes, resources, scarcity, scarce, and trade-off. Identifying facts and details in reading selections to help us understand will be the reading skill we work on this week.
In Math, we have progressed to adding 2-digit numbers with regrouping. We will continue to practice these new skills this week and will finish Topic 4 next week. Not having basic addition and subtraction facts mastered is slowing down some students - please continue to practice at home.
The iReady App for reading and math is something we are using across all grade levels this year to individualize student learning. It helps to fill in the gaps in areas where students are weak and builds on their strengths. Our goal is to have all students spend at least 45 minutes each week on both reading and math. We do spend some time in class using iReady, but students are encouraged to work independently at home, especially on days when homework is light.
Please remember to send your child with outerwear for the colder days ahead. We go outside for recess every day unless it is raining, snowing, or bitterly cold.
