News for the Week of Dec. 3 - 7

Post date: Nov 30, 2018 9:07:48 PM

The kids are so excited as they receive the gift of Penance and Reconciliation this weekend and we begin our celebration of Advent next week. There is much happening over the next few weeks before Christmas and it is sometimes hard to contain their enthusiasm!

On Monday morning, the 2nd graders will finally meet and begin getting to know their 8th grade Sacramental Buddies! Occasional meetings and activities will take place throughout the remaining school year.

We are beginning cursive handwriting instruction. Please encourage your child to take their time and do their best.

This week in Reading our main selection is realistic fiction called Dear Juno. Story vocabulary words from the selection are:

persimmons, photograph, envelope, smudged.

High frequency words to know are: answer, company, faraway, parents, picture, school, wash

We will be working with the long o vowel sound spelled o, oa, and ow this week. Spelling words for Friday's test are:

goat

most

toast

told

hold

bowl

ago

toad

show

float

open

slow

In Math we will begin exploring Data and Graphs with Chapter 11. Some still need practice with time concepts, so we may do some additional work in that area, too. Subtraction facts still need to be practiced. This week we will likely get back to timed subtraction quizzes. Once your child demonstrates mastery by scoring at least 90% in 4 minutes, they won't have to participate in this activity in class, but should continue to practice on occasion. It won't be long before we will be working on regrouping for addition and subtraction - this will be much easier to learn if your child knows their basic facts!

Remember, if you'd like to order Scholastic Books from the December catalogs recently sent home, please do so by Dec. 10. I need to place the order by then to ensure arrival before Christmas break. Thanks!
