This week, our phonics and spelling focus is on words with the consonant patterns wr, kn, gn, st, and mb.
Tested vocabulary words from this week's narrative nonfiction main selection Around One Cactus are: incredible, lofty, noble, search, stinging, survivors, topic, unseen, waterless
Spelling words for this Friday's test are:
thumb
gnaw
written
know
climb
design
wrist
crumb
assign
wrench
knot
wrinkle
lamb
knob
knit
wrestler
bologna
cologne
honeycomb
knickknack
As always, we will have a pre-test on the words at the beginning of the week. Students can earn extra credit points on their Friday test by writing sentences using the words they misspell on the pretest and turning them in before the test. Many students are taking advantage of this opportunity, and the extra practice is boosting test scores.
Reminder -- Don't forget about the Six Flags Read to Succeed program. Information was sent home before Christmas break. Completed and signed logs are due by February 24 to qualify for a free ticket to Six Flags this summer. You have plenty of time!
This week we will finish our study of collecting and organizing data with a test on Friday. During the following couple of weeks, we will do some work with fractions before we dive into multiplication, then division. If you haven't already, please begin preparing at home for multiplication by purchasing good, old-fashioned multiplication flash cards. They can get boring after awhile, so supplement at-home practice with the many available apps and computer games to build multiplication fact memorization. There is no getting around the need to memorize these facts in order to be successful. Multiplication is repeated addition. Practicing skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, etc. is a good way to start. Please invest the time and energy to help your child before it becomes a struggle. Thanks for your support!
