News for the Week of Nov. 2-6

Post date: Oct 31, 2020 5:36:57 PM

I hope our first week of eLearning was accomplished without too much inconvenience or stress for parents and students. I was happy to be able to see smiles that weren't hidden behind masks. If you haven't already, please photograph and email the requested written work from last week. Unless I hear differently, students who were previously were attending school in-person can return to school on Wednesday, 11/4, but I'll keep you posted.

Also, I received news from tech support that they were able to remotely add the Google Classroom app to the iPads that were loaned out from St. Linus. This means that you should be able to log into your child's gmail account and join our Google Meet directly on the school iPads beginning Monday. Please don't shoot the messenger if this doesn't work!

For this coming week, our phonics and spelling work will be focused on plurals. Spelling words for the Friday's test are:

lunch

stories

switch

babies

lunches

tune

switches

note

story

tunes

baby

notes

people

scared

In our reading work we will focus on identifying cause and effect and will enjoy the main selection The Bremen Town Musicians, a dramatic fairy tale. Vocabulary words to know from this selection are: mill, monsters, robbers, excitement, musician

We will also practice the high frequency words: bought, people, pleasant, probably, scared, shall, sign

We will be completing Topic 4 in Math with a review on Monday. Students will take their Topic 4 assessment digitally on Tuesday. We will also complete a Cumulative/Benchmark assessment of the first 4 topics we've studied this year so far. Then we will begin Topic 5: Subtract Within 100 Using Strategies. Please encourage your child to review their basic addition and subtraction facts regularly. Many do not have them mastered and this accounts for errors in their more complex addition and subtraction work.

We will be finishing our Presidential Election unit this week in Social Studies and beginning Unit 1 in our text, likely on Wednesday.

Please remind your child to login to the iReady app often at home to complete both Reading and Math lessons. We do spend some time on this in the classroom, but ideally, students should complete at least 45 minutes in both Reading and Math weekly for the lessons to be effective.

Once we are back in the classroom please remember to send your child with a sweater or sweatshirt to wear in our classroom so that we can keep our windows partially opened for good airflow. They also should have outerwear appropriate for our daily outdoor recess. Thanks, and I'll see you on Monday back in our Google Meet!
