News for the Week of February 1-5

Post date: Jan 29, 2021 9:31:40 PM

This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week with different events each day!

For Monday, students may dress as their favorite community hero (not a fictional superhero!) Or they may wear crazy socks, if that sounds like more fun. We do have P.E. on Monday, so be sure to wear your athletic shoes.

On Tuesday, students may come to school in their favorite cozy pajamas. Be sure to bring shoes that you can wear outside for recess!

On Wednesday, we celebrate our nation by wearing red, white, and blue.

On Thursday students may dress up as their favorite Saint OR any St. Linus clothing that says "St. Linus"

On Friday it is Teacher Appreciation Day, so students need to be in uniform.

Of course, our remote learners are welcome to join in the fun Monday through Thursday. Students who don't want to "dress down" should be in their school uniform.

This week in Reading our main selection is expository nonfiction called Life Cycle of a Pumpkin. Important vocabulary words from the selection are: bumpy, fruit, harvest, root, smooth, soil, vine

Our phonics and spelling focus is on the vowel patterns oo and u, as in cook and full. Here are the 14 words for Friday's weekly spelling test:

cook

wood

push

book

stood

July

pull

hood

full

shook

brook

put

does

give

In Math we are finishing Topic 8 - Time and Money with another review and an assessment early in the week. Practice at home with coins and an analog clock will help to reinforce what we've been practicing in class. We spent a lot of time reviewing and practicing in class last week and the students are feeling much more confidence. We will be starting Topic 9 - Numbers to 1,000 with a new volume of the Math book, so students will bring their finished book home to keep. Please keep reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts at home so that working with 3-digit numbers isn't overwhelming.

Please encourage your child to independently complete at least 45 minutes of iReady Reading Lessons and Math Lessons each week at home. We do some of this during class time when we can. Students can login to their account and easily see how many minutes they've completed each week.

In Science we have completed our work studying Plants and Animals. We will put our focus on Social Studies for the next few weeks, beginning Unit 2: Our Earth.

First Reconciliation is right around the corner. The Gift of Reconciliation book sent home with your child is meant to be shared with parents. Completing the first 2 chapters before February 8 would be great, and you can set a pace that works for your family to complete the book's pages before the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation on February 21. Once that is complete, families can begin reading and completing the activities in The Gift of Eucharist. If you have questions about the times and dates of the upcoming Sacramental activities and events, please feel free to contact Dr. Cheryl Antos, who has graciously set everything up and is handling so many details.
