We Need New Desks Again!

Fitz Intermediate needs to invest in some new desks AGAIN! Students at Fitz are not liking these desks and it's becoming a problem. Most students wish we had our old desks back.

The desks at Fitz may have a cool design, but there are a definitely more cons than pros. The desks are shaped in a weird triangular shape. Also, most students say that the chairs are insanely uncomfortable. An 8th grader named Victor said, “[The desks are] alright, but I miss the other desks. [The new desks] are uncomfortable.” Nobody wants to go to school and sit in uncomfortable desks for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.

These desks are even worse for teachers than they are for students. Some teachers don’t know how to arrange their classrooms with the triangular desks. Furthermore, there have been a number of chairs that have been bent by students. The students lean too far back, or lean way too much to the front causing the chairs to bend. Once these chairs bend, they are very hard to fix. One of our teachers said, “When we looked at them, we didn’t realize how flimsy they were and so easy to tip over, and how easy they chip.” So there are some bad sides to having new desks, even for our teachers.

On the other hand, Fitz getting new desks could be seen as a good thing. Fitz has had those old square desks since my mom came to school here. That's quite some time ago. Furthermore, these new desks are good for both left and right handed kids, and our old desks were really only convenient for right handed students. Also, it's good to have a change every so often and we will eventually get used to them. I mean, I’d rather have new desks than have old scratched up wood and metal ones. The chairs are also good for rocking; if you get anxious, you can just softly rock back and forth in your chair and not distract anyone.

I do think that Fitz should invest in some new desks in the near future, but these will do for now. The colors match with the school too. There are definitely pros and cons for these new things. Fitz needs new desks and this cannot be avoided.
