The Boys and Girls Club had basketball and soccer tryouts August 29. Tryouts lasted one week. The names of those who made the team were announced on Tuesday, September 6. The staff read the names of the students who made the teams during snack time at the benches.
Not everyone who tried out made a team. The coach made sure to pick the best players so their team is successful this year. Only 15 players were chosen for the basketball team and 20 for the soccer team. Sports practices are going to be Mondays and Wednesdays for soccer, and Tuesdays and Thursdays for basketball.
Students who tried out were happy to do so. “When I tried out, I felt no pressure. I felt like if I did good [and] I would make it,” said Frankie Duenas. Since Frankie felt no pressure, he made the basketball team.
There are some rules to playing on the team. Students need to pay 20 dollars to be on the team. Ten dollars for the uniform and ten dollars for transportation. A bus picks up students in sports to drive them to their game, except for home games. One negative thing about playing sports at BGC is that there are no spectators allowed, so students' parents can't come to the games. There are playoffs every year, so if a Fitz team beats all the other BGC teams, they will go to the playoffs, and then finals to try to win for the school.
