Fitz Hosts Noche de Altares

On Thursday, November 2, Latinos Unidos, AVID, and DLI hosted their Noche de Altares in the school MPR at 5:00 PM. Noche de Altares is an event that celebrates Dia de los Muertos, which is celebrated to honor and remember the dead. 

Noche de Altares was a great event that united students together with their families. Parents and students enjoyed getting the opportunity to see how Fitz celebrates Dia de los Muertos. For example, a seventh grader stated, “What I like about Dia de los Muertos is spending time with my family and learning about my culture.” Students who know very little about their culture got to experience this tradition here at Fitz and got to see how others celebrate this special tradition during the holidays. 

Also, many parents got a chance to see this event for the first time. A parent stated, “The event was nice. They have a lot of different foods. The altar was very nice and they had a good turn out from all the parents. This is our first year. My daughter is in the 7th grade, and it was a very nice event!” This shows how parents and family members enjoyed seeing their culture showcased here at Fitz, while those who don’t share the same culture were able to learn about a new culture! 

Some Fitz teachers celebrate Dia de los Muertos outside of school. Ms. Zamora, who attended the event, shared how she celebrates Dia de los Muertos in her community: “I celebrate Dia de los Muertos by attending different community events that celebrate Dia de los Muertos and they do different things, like; face painting, food, music, and I love attending these events.” This shows how many people find different ways to celebrate this with family and friends.

Noche de Altares is a great way to celebrate Dia de los Muertos at Fitz if you aren't available at home. It was a successful event where everyone had a lot of fun and got to be with family and friends remembering about their loved ones.
