At 11:59, students come rushing out of the 4th period to go to lunch. They go straight to the lunch line, wondering what's on the menu. But they are faced with disappointment when they see pizza for the 67th time this week! Starving, they have no choice but to get the same old pizza. Seeing as they get the same lunch every day, they get bored and stop getting lunch.
Students usually complain about how bland the school lunch is. Even though we have a station with sauces, lettuce, and even pickles for pickle lovers! These things are here to give the food more flavor, and it gives students the freedom to choose what they want to put in their lunches. And they could even leave their lunches for another person who wants them. But still, there is a big portion of students who say that the food has no flavor. For instance, a 7th grader named Yareli Sandoval has stated, “The chicken sandwich is bad because the chicken is cold and it tastes like nothing!” Another student named Allison Cisneros (7) commented on this as well, saying, “Yes, the cheeseburger actually makes me gag because of how it tastes!” In addition, how could students want to eat something that doesn’t taste good? Also, how could someone possibly make a food that disgusting that no one likes! As you can see, not a lot of students think the lunch has flavor, nor is it even cooked!
However, the quality and repetitive lunches are a big issue with students. A good example of this is the Domino's pizza. We have it on Mondays and Thursdays, but it feels like it’s every day. Specifically, the pepperoni kind since the cheese kind rarely pops up. A lot of people are tired of it. And even when they get it, they have to use paper napkins to take the grease off. A seventh grader by the name of Melanie Almazan Can has said, “They need to stop having pizza because we have pizza a lot.” This may not seem like a big deal, but this is why students have stopped getting lunch. Of course, it's their choice not to get lunch, but students do want to eat—just not pizza anymore. Another example of repetitive and bad quality lunch is the chicken sandwich. Students say that it's so overrated and just honestly not good at all. Sophia Caro, who is a seventh grader, has stated, “The chicken sandwich gets so boring after the first bite.” As you can tell, people are tired of eating the same lunches!
However, not everyone agrees. Some students believe that the school lunch is amazing and it's the best thing ever in the world! For example, Daniela Suastegui (7) has said, “The spicy chicken sandwiches are so good because they're so tasty!” They might taste good, but they are definitely not good at all for your body. In fact, they might be the reason why you get sick. Most of our school lunches are usually ultra-processed. Studies show that ultra-processed foods have been linked to higher risks of illness. Illnesses like type 2 diabetes and, somehow, even Dementia!
Furthermore, what if the chicken gives you salmonella? Or what if it gives you food poisoning! Finally, when lunch is cold, barely cooked, and probably unsafe, it's hard to think that school lunch could ever be good.
In conclusion, we should have more school lunch options because it's bland, too repetitive, and not good quality.
