8th-grade students went on a field trip to Los Amigos and other schools on February 15. They embarked on this field trip to learn what they can expect next year in high school.
Fitz students had many emotions and opinions about their trip to Los Amigos HS. Some thought that it was exciting, a fun excursion, but others were nervous and didn't really know what to expect. A student who thought the trip was exciting said, “It was fun, we got to see our future school.” Going to Los Amigos was fascinating for students because they were able to see how the campus works and tour real high school classrooms.
But are students actually prepared for high school? Some Falcons already feel prepared. An eighth-grade student stated, “I already know what's going to come with the school,” she said. The field trip really did help make students at Fitz more comfortable with the idea of this new chapter in their life by showing them how students work at the school and the regular day-to-day life that they have there.
Yet, not everyone feels comfortable with the transition. An eighth grader stated she feels a little nervous about going to Los Amigos because “It’s a bigger campus than the one here, and I haven't been there that much, but I will have my friends there with me.” It seems students are nervous about the transition but feel more comfortable about the change when their friends are there with them.
Teachers believe that the field trip would comfort the students and show them that although high school might come with more work, it won't be all that different. For example, Ms. Chin believes that “It will make students more comfortable with the campus and help them adapt to their new environment.” This shows that everybody acknowledges that this field trip was meant to ease students' nerves about the upcoming year.
These eighth graders had an amazing experience at their future school and glad that many of them feel more comfortable about this new change. Overall, this field trip made students feel and see how high school will be for them in the upcoming school year.
