Our 2025 Spelling Bee representatives have finally been chosen! Every year, Fitz Intermediate selects a team to represent us at the district competition. This year, members Joaquin Ablis, Roman Lopez, Joel Herrera, Victoria Ruiz, and Evelyn Vong were chosen. How lucky they were to make the cut!
First, to be selected, the members had to excel in their class spelling bees. Every English class held a competition where the few people who had the highest scores advanced to the next round. Then, they entered another round held by Mrs. Hudson, where they had to spell 50 words. The highest scorers then had a run-off, where, as a result, five total were selected, one as a backup.
Next comes the studying process. Spelling is very challenging as there are over 170k words in the English language. It would be impossible to memorize everything! Mrs. Hudson, as the leader of the spelling team, is doing her best to prepare the students. She stated, “We will work on our lists given to us by the presenters, but honestly, a wide vocabulary and a habit of reading a lot will really help almost the most of all!” Additionally, she said, “We are going to practice twice per week during lunch. I will print out lists of words to study. In addition, we will practice the feeling of 'pressure' by getting up in front of everyone during practice.” With Mrs. Hudson’s guidance and years of experience, I’m confident they’ll do a splendid job!
Despite all of the challenges that come with representing our entire school, each contestant still chose to join. When asked for his motives, Joel Herrera stated, "I tried out in elementary and never made it past the class, so I studied and tried again!” Herrera’s perseverance and determination show that hard work pays off. After auditioning, each member had their doubts on whether or not they’d be admitted. Victoria Ruiz hadn’t made it in elementary as well, so she didn’t expect to make the team. We are very fortunate to have such awesome falcons representing our school.
The district competition will take place at Edgar District Meeting Center on January 15 at 6:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join the audience to support our Falcons! More information can be found in Room 35 from Mrs. Hudson.
