Distance learning is finally over! Fitz students are back on campus for the 2021-2022 school year. Fitz opened its doors to all students on August 16, 2021. Some students feel incredibly grateful to be back on campus. Luis Martinez said, “I am really confident about this year and feel that something big is going to happen.”
Distance learning was difficult for many students. Students felt unmotivated and lazy while learning from home. For example, some students would log into different sites to play video games. Other times, students would experience a low WIFI signal resulting in problems joining class meetings. An anonymous 7th grader said, “I had many tough times trying to enter the meetings with my horrible WIFI connection, so teachers would always kick me out.”
However, not all students are happy to be back in person. Another anonymous 7th grader said, “I don’t really like being back in school because when I arrive, I am already home-sick even though it’s barely been like 10 minutes, and I have to do all this work. . . and being so stressed with teachers arguing with me asking why I didn’t turn in an assignment on time, and having to deal with huge projects that I haven’t even started on. . . I just wish we could go back to distance-learning.”
Although some students would rather continue distance learning, the majority agree that being back in school has been better. On campus, students can interact with all their teachers and friends and be active during PE. Mr Nguyen, a math and AVID teacher agrees. When asked how he felt about returning to Fitz, he said, “Well, I ́m very happy to be back. Seeing all my students in person and working with them. . . makes me very proud."
