Homework is definitely a controversial topic among students and teachers. Some people believe that homework is a waste of time, while others believe that homework is an opportunity to study and to understand what's going on in class. So really, is homework a wasted effort or a chance to improve grades?
People have different perspectives about homework, some negative, some positive. An anonymous 7th grader who turns in her homework on time said, “I don’t like homework; it takes way too long to do it all.” This student gets good grades and is a good student, but feels like homework still shouldn’t be given out and can be too much for them. For example, if teachers all give out homework, students will have 6 pieces of homework to complete! Homework is likely to get in the way of students' daily life, maybe they have a sport to attend, need to eat dinner, shower, etc.
Even though most students have negative opinions towards homework, some may be positive. For some students homework is important because it affects grades in a positive way. An anonymous 7th grader said, “Kids get to learn more and start to develop that skill (of doing your homework).” Homework can be a form of studying, which often helps with any tests in class or class work by getting a better understanding of what you are currently learning about in your classes.
Some teachers even have their own opinions about homework. For example, if students deserve to receive homework. Mr. Nguyen expressed, “It is not about deserving or earning. It is about the responsibility of the student to practice so that they don't lose what they learned earlier in the day.” This quote demonstrates the importance of learning a subject in class and keeping the skills that they had during that period. It can also as well speak for many teachers who give homework. Students often see homework as a punishment, which makes them not want to do it. But teachers don’t see it as a punishment, more of a time to study while at home.
Overall, opinions towards homework will always be different. Some may like it, some don't. Students at Fitz often don't want to do homework, but most of the time they won't know how it benefits them.
