Fitz Language Academy celebrated Red Ribbon Week October 24 through October 28. A subject was given for each day. Students were also given bracelets promoting a drug free lifestyle.
Monday’s theme was Wear Red to promote a drug free environment. The slogan for Monday was "Rally in Red." Students came to school wearing red shirts, red sweaters, and other red apparel. This theme was very easy to follow and was well liked by students. For example, Ana Virgos said, ”It was really easy to follow because like everyone has red.”
Tuesday was Twin Day. "Friends don’t let friends do drugs" was the slogan for Tuesday. Students and teachers participated by showing up to school twinning with a friend. Even Mr. Gomez and Mr. Magana sported matching suits, ties, and pants. Twin Day was the most popular day. When we asked for a ranking of each day, Erika Nguyen said, "Twin day was a five out of five."
Wednesday’s theme was dress like the 80-90’s Decades. The slogan for Wednesday was “Turn back the clock and turn your back on drugs.” Students and teachers got to wear clothes that made them look like they were from a different decade. One student who participated was Analiese Perez. She went all out by wearing fishnet gloves, scrunchies, neon pink, topped with a big bow. She wasn't the only one enjoying the 80-90's Decades. An anonymous 7th grader said, “Me, personally, my favorite day was Wednesday because it was super easy to dress up for that day.”
Thursday’s theme was Anything But a Water Bottle Day. “Drugs make simple things complicated!” was the slogan for Thursday. People came with plastic bags, medicine jars, and gallons filled with water to drink to get them through the day. However, most people didn't like this theme. “I would change Anything But a Water Bottle Day because it was messy. I’d change it to anything but a backpack day,” said Mrs. Velekei.
The week closed with Celebrity Day. The slogan was “Celebrate what is good in life.” People on campus got to wear their favorite band, sports team, movie, or comic t-shirts. Celebrity Day was the perfect theme to end off this week. It was fun seeing students dress up for each day. For example, Vivian Nguyen said, “It is fun because you get to dress up for each day and express yourself for school.”
Red Ribbon Week is meant to remind students not to do drugs. It's important not to do drugs because it is very unhealthy and you can get addicted. Most students can agree that drugs are not good for you. For example, Kevin Nguyen said, “In my experience it’s been fun and makes me not want to do drugs.” Drugs can get you into serious trouble for example you can die from it.
