Fitz Intermediate students aren't happy with the dress code. Many students believe that the dress code limits what females and males can wear.
“I don't agree with not being allowed to use low neckline shirts because of the size of my chest,'' said an anonymous female student. She feels like she doesn't have the freedom or comfort to wear shirts that are too revealing because of her chest size, something beyond her control.
The Fitz dress code is limited when it comes to shirts students can wear. “It’s too revealing,” “it shows too much of your skin,” “it’s not appropriate for school,” and “it’s not professional for the school campus,” are all phrases that have been used to say students are not following the dress code.
Mrs. Hocking believes that our current dress code is more flexible than previous years. “I feel like the dress code is fair for both males and females,” she said. According to Mrs. Hocking, the 2019 dress code was stricter, which is why she feels the current dress code is fair.
But our current dress code doesn’t allow girls to wear most fashionable items. Spaghetti strap shirts are only one example of a popular clothing style students are not allowed to wear. “When I wear spaghetti straps, I have to put on a sweater because if I don’t, I will get dress coded,” said Gomez, an eighth grade student. Spaghetti straps cover everything except the shoulders, so why aren't students allowed to wear them? Because they are too revealing? If so, what is revealing about them? Spaghetti straps don’t show any skin other than the shoulders.
Clothing like solid color shirts worn with Dicky pants are not allowed in a big group because it is gang related. “I feel comfortable with what I’m wearing and it’s basically the only type of clothes I have and what I like, so I think it's wrong seeing this style as gang related,” said an anonymous student.
Male students feel as if they're being attacked or judged because of the way they dress. They're not the only ones that feel this way. Two girls from school decided to dress like the guys do, just to see if they would get in trouble for wearing a similar outfit. The district didn't do anything about it; they thought it was a normal outfit. However, guys have been dress coded for similar outfits. Why? Why do guys get in trouble for wearing certain clothes but girls don’t?
Fitz is an amazing school, but students want to be able to wear the clothes they have in their closets. The current dress code policy is limiting and sometimes unfair.
