On September 5, Fitz welcomed students and parents to come to Back-to-School Night to meet their teachers. Back-to-School Night builds community by inviting students’ parents on campus to see how the staff at Fitz are and to tour the school.
During Back-to-School Night, teachers had around eight minutes to present or talk to parents about how their classroom works. Mr. Dishong, who had a presentation for parents and students, had to present in eight minutes. This seems difficult, but when asked, he said, “It was a little hard, but I think it’s about right. Eight minutes allows us to finish Back-to-School Night in an hour, which I don’t think parents would want it to be any longer.” Many students and Mrs. Kao agreed that they didn’t want BTSN to be any longer.
During BTSN there were many opportunities to meet staff members and tour the school. When looking through Mrs. Kao’s perspective, she said that she enjoyed seeing students’ parents. In her exact words, “My favorite part of Back-to-School Night was meeting the grown-ups! I was so happy to see our students with their grown-ups.” Mrs. Kao doesn’t get to see students’ parents often, so BTSN was a great way to reach out to parents and build community.
BTSN should be a mandatory part of the school year because it allows students to tour their school if they’re still not used to it and it allows parents to see what their child is going through every day. BSTN also allows parents to meet the teachers take care of their kids and educate them. BTSN additionally lets parents understand their students’ environment. This gives parents and staff members to connect and build community.
Overall, this year’s Back-to-School Night was an amazing experience for families and staff members by allowing parents onto campus. Fitz Intermediate was grateful for all the families that did attend, and hopefully, more families will be able to attend next year!
