ASB organized Red Ribbon Week from October 25 to October 29. The event ranged from dress up days to games in the East Quad. Those who participated earned a free candy on Friday.
Students Rallied in Red on Tuesday by wearing as much red as possible to raise awareness on the destruction caused by drugs.
Wednesday was Mouth Off Against Drugs, a day students could wear their decorated masks with an anti-drug message or a unique school appropriate smile. Students who showed their decorated mask to ASB in Room 19 got a free piece of candy.
Thursday’s theme was Team Up Against Drugs. Students could wear anything sports related, like their favorite soccer team’s jersey or a hat.
Students wore their Halloween costumes for the last day of Ribbon Week. ASB held a costume contest on the stage in the East Quad at lunch. The contest had a wide range of costumes from fictional realms. There were many contestants ranging from a special agent to the Frosty Boyz. As ASB introduced the contestants, they got to walk across the stage and introduce themselves and their costumes. The winner got multiple Fitz coins, a giant Twix bar, and a trophy. Avea Niumata was declared the winner of the contest as Vampire Woody. “I felt great when I won the contest because I worked so hard on the lenses and the whole costume in general,” said Niumata.
Schools hold Red Ribbon Week to avoid drug use. The website Red Ribbon Campaign talks about what Red Ribbon Week represents. According to the website, “Youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America.”
Students loved dressing up for Red Ribbon Week. Ruben Gonzalez, a seventh grader, said, “I loved Red Ribbon Week, since we got to do different things on different days.”
When asked what she thought about Red Ribbon Week, Ms. Trujillo said, “The main purpose of this event is for the kids to live a drug free life.”
Overall, Fitz students enjoyed dressing up and participating in the Red Ribbon Week activities.
