AVID tutors play a key role at Fitz. They help students understand lessons and feel more confident about learning while preparing them for college. The AVID program at Fitz has three college tutors: Mr. Marcus, Ms. Vetzayra, and Mr. Abner.
Mr. Marcus has been working as an AVID tutor for two years and is in his third year of college at Long Beach State University. His favorite memory as an AVID tutor has been taking the 8th graders to visit colleges. Growing up, he was also in AVID, from seventh grade all the way to his senior year, and his experience was overall great. He decided to become an AVID Tutor since he always wanted to become a teacher, and being an AVID tutor at GGUSD is a great way to get his foot in the district. His favorite thing about being an AVID tutor is being able to connect with students and help them with difficult tasks they struggle with.
Another AVID tutor is Ms. Vetazayra. She was inspired to become an AVID tutor because of her sister, since her sister said it was fun and amazing to work with students. Any time a student struggles with a subject or assignment, she makes sure to have them bring out their notes and break them down for them. Like Mr. Marcus, Ms Vetzayra was also in the AVID program for six years. One thing that she finds difficult as a tutor is the last-minute planning. She states, ”I feel like the service hours don't give me much time, and we have to plan everything at the last minute.” She is currently in her third year at California State University, Fullerton.
Finally, we have Mr. Abner. Mr. Abner is a Fitz alumni! He attended Fitz from 2018 to 2020. He decided to join AVID when they interviewed him, saying that AVID would be helpful for his high school year. In Los Amigos, He had an amazing experience since it was really helpful for his college applications. Being an AVID tutors have struggles, and one of his struggles was also the work hours since there isn't much time to study the lesson. His favorite memory of being an AVID tutor is being able to do potlucks with the seventh and eighth graders.
Overall, the AVID tutors play a very important role at Fitz Intermediate because they work hard every day to support students in subjects they struggle with the most. They are willing to explain things again, answer questions, and encourage students. Because of their dedication and patience, many students feel more confident in their learning and more prepared for their success.
