Many students claim to be sad at school, and it’s affecting their academics and social life. But what is making students so sad and how can we help them?
Students who are sad may be sad about what is happening at home, being bullied, earning bad grades, or problems with friends. Why does home life affect students at school? Home life affects students because it puts emotional stress on them, which impacts their success and learning. Tym Nguyen agrees that home life does affect students' learning: “I think home life affects students at school because it can make them overthink about what can be happening at home or affect their academic performance at school.” Something as simple as parents arguing can really affect students emotionally.
Another valid reason students may be sad is because of problems with friends. Having problems with friends can cause a student to lose motivation and become depressed. Megan Leon agrees that many students are sad because of their classmates: “[Students] are sad because their friends are probably talking about them, leaving them out, which leads to sadness and not wanting to go to school. For instance, when a student is going through a problem with a friend, it can be challenging to concentrate in class as their mind may be preoccupied with the situation and their emotions, making it hard to fully engage in the lesson.” So, as you see, Megan Leon believes students are endangered by bullies and friend problems. Also, bullying and problems with friends can make students more likely to develop anxiety.
Finally, students may be sad about grades and learning at school. Students may be struggling with keeping their grades up which can lead to feeling hopelessness or sadness. Magdelena Nunez agrees that students are sad because of grades: ”Parents can get mad [if their kid gets] poor grades, which can lead to stress.” Also, the poor grades may be caused by learning difficulties.
If you’re struggling with mental health or sadness at school, you can talk to counselors, teachers, or you can go to a Wellness Room, if you have one at your school. It is important to tell someone about what you're going through so you won't have to bottle up issues inside of you.
So this is the sum of the reasons why students are sad at school and what we can do to help students.Remember you are not alone you can talk to a trusted adult or teacher about your problems.
