Fate/Zero is an anime that was made in Fall 2011. It is an anime that is made by the famous animation studio Ufotable. Ufotable is an animation studio with great renown that is known for its absolutely phenomenal and unique animation style. It is also an animation studio that has a large budget for any project they decide to animate, so any project they decide to animate will always look amazing. Also, due to Ufotable’s extensive budget, the voice actors they hire are some of the best voice actors in Japan. For example, the protagonist of the series, Kiritsugu Emiya, is voiced by none other than Rikiya Koyama who plays Jouichirou Yukihira from Food Wars and Shinjuro Rengoku from Demon Slayer.

Fate/Zero is considered the prequel to the Fate/Unlimited Blade works series, and it is based on a novel that was written by Gen Urobuchi. This anime is set in a fantasy world where mages are a secretive part of society that operates competitively and selfishly. In Fate/Zero, there is this magic item called the Holy Grail that has been sought after for a couple of hundred years. The Holy Grail is supposedly an omnipotent item that can grant wishes. Seven chosen mages may take part in this Holy Grail War and the way they are chosen is by how the grail marks people’s hands. When the seven people are chosen, they are to summon a servant. A servant is a heroic spirit from any time period that is summoned to help the participants that are called masters. There are seven classes of servants and each master can only summon one servant from a certain class, and those classes are Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker. This anime is focused on our protagonist Kiritsugu Emiya and his servant Saber to win the holy grail war to grant their wishes., the conflicts between Saber and Kiritsugu, and the ideological differences between Kiritsugu and other mages.

Overall, this anime is amazing plot-wise because of how plot-focused the story is. There is hardly any fluff or any comedy relief at all. This anime provides insight into the philosophy of the world and the philosophy of people and questions the actual definition of a hero of justice. There are two seasons of this anime and it is one of the most heart-wrenching animes I’ve ever seen.
