Reading poetry is easily my favorite type of literature. This book in particular is one I think every girl needs. Amanda Lovelace is an award winning author of “women are some kind of magic” poetry series, which gave us the book Shine Your Icy Crown. It's a story about not letting society and those in power limit and dictate your greatest potential.

Shine Your Icy Crown is a fairytale in and of itself. Lovelace incorporates stories about a princess who doesn’t want to accept a crown from a prince and a big sister’s advice to a little sister along with wisdom and advice. The poems that stuck out most to me were the ones about the empowerment of women and loving yourself. My favorite section of the book was the ‘big sister’ and ‘little sister’ poems. It alternates from ‘little sister’ being stuck and and having darker opinions about herself and ‘big sister’ offering words of encouragement and empowerment. It offers two different ways on how we can talk to ourselves when we don’t have a ‘big sister’ to lean on. We can either tear ourselves apart and be cruel or we can listen to advice and learn to appreciate who we are. We can learn to look at ourselves with kindness the story's characters and speakers learn.

Lovelace incorporates pleasing arts and visuals with feminist fantasies on the front cover and throughout the book. She writes brutal truth on the struggles women face and how to overcome those walls. Her poetry continues to be smooth and straight to the point. From a readers standpoint, it's as if she's sharing her thought process and inspiration for the reader to plainly see. I can easily give this book a 5 star rating. It was so well written and organized. I adore this series and I’m looking forward to reading more.
