Previously on High School Musical the Musical the Series, we got to go through the East High Leopards preparing for their play of the famous original Disney Channel Movie: High School Musical. Through much drama between the two main characters of the show, Ricky Bowen, played by Joshua Bassett, and Nini Salazar-Roberts, played by Olivia Rodrigo, they end up finally realizing that they do indeed love each other and admit it to one another in a powerful scene. Now that they have had such a successful play, Ricky, Nini, and the rest of the theater kids have become a close knit family who are each there to support each other. However, we get left on a cliffhanger at the end of season one when Nini gets offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to go away to a performing arts school, the Youth Actor’s Conservatory all the way in Denver, Colorado. Will this long distance relationship end up hurting Ricky and Nini, and how will the rest of her friends feel?

In the upcoming season trailer, we are introduced to the new spring musical that East High will put on: Beauty and the Beast. However, we see from the theater kids that they originally wanted to put on a performance of High School Musical 2, seeing how well their performance of High School Musical went. The drama teacher, Miss Jenn, wants to put on Beauty and the Beast and take part in the Alan Menken Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater after running into North High’s musical director, Zacky Roy, played by special guest star Derek Hough. As he tells Miss Jenn that he is entering the contest with his school’s performance of The Little Mermaid, Miss Jenn comes up with the idea to also go into the contest with the play adaptation of a Disney Original Movie.

The trailer did such an amazing job of picking up where season one left off by giving an indirect recap of what had happened. We see Miss Jenn’s plans for the musical, Ricky and Nini trying to figure out how to make their long distance relationship work, and new drama with East High and North High. So far we see all the original cast members from season one returning along with some fresh faces. As previously mentioned, we are introduced to North High’s musical director, Zacky Roy, played by special guest star Derek Hough. We also come to see a new girl from North High who looks like she will try to come in between the newfound relationship that Ricky and Nini had just rekindled by the way she was acting and flirting around with Ricky. With tensions rising between Ricky and Nini’s rocky relationship and pulling off a play that should be much more professional than the last, fans can be prepared to go on this emotional roller coaster that will hopefully end with a masterpiece.

The trailer contained a new song from Season 2 and fans can expect to hear a lot more than just a couple of songs. Season 1 was great at incorporating songs from the original High School Musical, as well as new songs sung beautifully by the cast. We can look forward to hearing songs from the soundtrack of Beauty and the Beast, along with songs written by Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo from the cast. These two have pursued both a singing career along with their acting career, and you have probably heard Olivia’s song Drivers Licence, which has been one of the biggest hit songs of 2021.

Season 2 of High School Musical the Musical the Series will be exclusively streamed on Disney+ starting Friday, May 14, 2021. However, you can stream all previous episodes of season 1 on Disney+ now.
