Noah Yorke, son of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, has released his first single: Trying Too Hard (Lullaby). Radiohead is a popular English rock band formed in 1985, most popular for their song Creep. Although Noah is developing his own voice separate from his father, people haven’t refrained from pointing out the similarities in their music.

This song is melancholic yet optimistic, conveying that you might not accomplish what you wish to. Despite this, you’re safe and are maybe just pushing your limits. The optimism of the lyrics contrasts with Radiohead’s typical contemplative and somber messages. This remains important as he’s expressed worry, speaking out that “It’s scary to try and establish one’s identity” and doesn’t wish to be seen as “just an offshoot.”

To establish that identity, Noah started off releasing music under the name “Alec Owen,” on Bandcamp. His father’s influence plays a big role in the world’s feelings towards his music, as well as his own. Within the first week of its release, Trying Too Hard had gained 10,000 plays, which is a feat regardless of his name. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, also Noah’s Godfather, tweeted about his release labeling it “a glorious piece of music.”

Trying Too Hard starts off soft with a subtle acoustic guitar melody. Soon after, the song transforms into this kaleidoscope soundscape that blends the simple progression with a more complex tune. The layers build on top of each other, producing a slightly off-putting yet beautiful combination. This is a similar pattern that Radiohead used in their songs, such as Daydreaming from the 2016 album “A Moon Shaped Pool”. They also used this style in Weird Fishes/Arpeggi from their 2007 album “In Rainbows” and more.

Posted on Spotify and YouTube, Noah is attempting to join the music world for the first time, as well as further developing his own voice. This is just the beginning of his career. Aside from having a similar sound to his father, it’s clear that he’s straying onto his own individual path to express himself and his inner thoughts.
