Chloe and Halle Bailey are two of the most talented artists in the R&B game right now, already two-time Grammy-nominated for their freshman The Kids Are Alright and sophomore Ungodly Hour album. Although they are known for being Beyonce’s prodigies, they prove just how talented they are with their second album. Producing tracks in a home studio by themselves, they give us their most authentic and intimate album yet. The way their voices blend so well together is undeniable, combined with their natural chemistry is what makes their music so appealing.

“Ungodly Hour” celebrates how young women are seen today and drips with honesty and confidence. It also shows how much both girls have matured from their first album back in 2018.

“Forgive Me” is a song about someone reclaiming their worth after having someone waste their time by lying and being unfaithful. “So forgive me, ‘cause I’m not teary/Best believe I move on to better things” is the line that emotes how they are done with that person and simply don’t care about them anymore after having been disrespected by them. In this song, Chloe and Halle provide some of their best vocals each shining in their own way, Chloe with her powerhouse verses and Halle with her airy choruses.

“Baby Girl” serves to empower all the females. The outro focuses on being a strong woman that your younger self would have looked up to. This is yet another song in which the duo delivers on harmonies and layering, creating a beautiful sound of divine femininity over a subtle snapping beat.

While part of the album focuses mostly on Chloe and Halle’s self-determination, they are not afraid to show some of their vulnerability as they do in the tracks “Lonely” and “Overwhelmed”. The 51-second track “Overwhelmed” might be the duo’s most raw song yet, with relatable imagery of feeling like you’re drowning because of problems in life. “Don’t Make it Harder on Me” is a soulful track that showcases the duo’s classic R&B influences.

Ungodly Hour really showcases their immaculate writing and seamless vocals. The beauty of the album is that the songs tell the story of two young women coming forward into their own person’s.
