The Academy Awards took place Sunday evening, February 24th. This year was quite competitive and generated a lot of buzz as to who would win this year’s nominees for best motion picture. These included Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Greenbook, Vice, A Star Is Born, and Roma.

Chatter about who would win surrounded Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born. Since Bohemian Rhapsody won the Golden Globe for best picture, it certainly had a chance. A Star is Born on the other hand, is a Hollywood darling as they remake the movie almost every decade.

Neither of the movies won, however. Greenbook, a movie about Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class African American pianist, played by Mahershala Ali, and his driver/bodyguard, Tony Lip, played by Viggo Mortensen, in the deep south during the year 1962.

Since we were both rooting for A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody, we decided to review each movie and determine ourselves who the winner would be.

Grace on Bohemian Rhapsody

Grace on Bohemian Rhapsody: This movie told the story of the British rock band Queen and their lead singer, Freddie Mercury. It gave details of Mercury’s life and Queen’s music journey. It was heart wrenching, exciting, and remarkable all at once. The film did a fantastic job at capturing Queen’s success and legacy as well as Mercury’s natural born talent. Every detail in the movie from the outfits, to the songs, to the actors, and the words made this film an absolute hit.

Bohemian Rhapsody won the following Oscars:

  • Best Actor: Remi Malek
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Sound Editing

If the circumstances were different Bohemian Rhapsody would have taken the Oscar for Best Picture.

Nicole on A Star Is Born

A Star is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper (who also stars in the film and was nominated for Best Actor), is the story of a country singer Jackson Maine falling in love with a struggling artist named Ally (Lady Gaga, who was also nominated for Best Actress).

This movie was well told and the soundtrack is amazing. Lady Gaga even won the Best Original Song Oscar for the song “Shallow."

The movie captures their love story and shows important issues such as alcohol and drug abuse. This was Cooper's directorial debut and for his freshman project, this turned out well considering how many awards it was nominated for.

A Star is Born will leave you angry, heartbroken and astonished.

Although this film was nominated for many awards and I think it deserved an Oscar for Best Picture because of the outstanding job they did with acting, singing and directing.
