We went around to all of the clubs on campus at Covina and asked the advisors to describe what their clubs do and what makes them special.

ASL CLub

“In ASL Club, our goal is to serve and support the deaf community and spread awareness about the importance of knowing ASL.” Advisors Flores and Vega decided to advise the ASL club because they're passionate about the deaf community and students’ involvement in it. They say they want people to join so they can become more understanding. “We want them to have a hands on experience.”

Meetings are once a month on a Thursday in H4.

Advisors: Mrs. Flores & Ms. Vega

Christian Club

In Christian Club student speakers attend frequently and recently the students have been writing kindness notes. Activities include: group talks, games, and getting to know people. When asked why students should join this club Ms. Howell said, “Because they want to know more about God or create fellowship with other christians.” Howell became an advisor because she wanted to have a place where students can express faith.

Meetings are every Wednesday at lunch in M5

Advisors: Ms. Howell

GSA (Gay Straight alliance)

The GSA Club (Gay Straight Alliance) is “always a safe place and everyone is friendly and kind.” A misconception most people have about this club is that if you're not gay you can't join. Mrs. Schmidt, the advisor, says “Straight people should join because you get a better perspective and understand people better.” If a student is gay, they should join the club because they’ll be supported in an environment with people like them. Mrs. Schmidt became an advisor because the one before resigned and she wanted to keep the club alive.

Meetings are twice a month every Thursday in H10

Advisors: Mrs. Schmidt

Interact

Interact is a service club where students are able to do community service. The club has events such as Operation Santa Clothes, Stockings for Troops, visiting Covina Gardens, Rayne thanksgiving, helping the homeless, beach cleanup, heavenly horse haven, and more. When asked why students should join Interact, Mrs. Morales said, “Obviously it's an outreach, it gives the students an opportunity to give back to their community.” Morales became an advisor because she admired the community service the club had done.

Meetings are the first Thursday of the month in the library and there are open enrollments in January for those who want to join.

Advisors: Mrs. Morales

Key Club

The Key Club is all about community service and leadership. It’s also an opportunity to meet up with other schools and work together to give back. Students will receive community service hours if needed. “This club is about meeting people, going places and having fun.” A student wanted to start this club, so Mr. Amasuga took action and became an advisor.

Meetings are usually on Wednesdays in H3

Advisors: Mr. Amasuga

Latino Culture club

The Latino Culture Club helps students embrace and learn about the culture. “The latino culture club is mainly a club to help students embrace the culture, learn about the culture, and kind of give a feeling of what latinos do.” Students should join so they can experience culture, countries, share pride, and learn skills for college. Ms. Fernandez became an advisor because she is a Spanish teacher and wants to represent the latino culture. She also thinks it’s important to learn Spanish outside of the classroom.

Meetings are every other Wednesday in G6.

Advisors: Ms. Fernandez

Active Minds

The Active Minds Club is a chance for students to talk about mental illness and direct people to the right place if needed. Mental illness usually begins in young adults who think they’re alone. Ms. Hajialiakbar says people should join because “It’s a chance to start a conversation about mental illness.”

She became an advisor because this topic is important to her because she witnessed it first hand and she wants students to express their feelings and share their concerns.

Meetings are the third or last Thursday of every month in H7.
