Best and Worst Oscar Moments

The 2019 Oscars caused a major uproar in the cinematic community, both good and bad. As always the drama started even before the first award winner was announced. The show itself, though, was filled with moments that will be known as the best Oscar moments in history, and some that completely missed the mark. Here are the top five best and worst moments of the 2019 Oscars.

Best moments

1. Queen Performance

Adam Lambert played alongside the iconic band Queen in an homage to Freddie Mercury. They performed “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions”. Guitarist Brian May gave everyone chills as he opened their performance with his iconic shred to the beat of “We Will Rock You”. Their set was amazing, but Lambert's vocals and showmanship stole the show.

2. Dolly Parton

Dolly was honored as the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year. Music giants like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Little Big Town sang alongside her in a fantastic tribute. Dolly is an eight time grammy winner and returned to the state for the first time in 18 years to perform not just her old classics, but her new music as well.

3. Woman Making History

Only three black women have won Oscars for anything other than writing. Two of them happened in one night. Hannah Beachler and Ruth E. Carter became the first black women to win Best Production Design and Best Costume design.

4. Amy, Maya, Tina

Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Maya Rudolph took the stage as the first ones to speak at the ceremony. They quickly addressed the hostless ceremony and having the three of them trade rapid-fire punch lines about the nominees was actually a great way to open the show. They even squeezed in a current-events update “So just a quick update, in case you’re confused: There is no host tonight,” Rudolph said. “There won’t be a popular movie category. And Mexico is not paying for the wall.” They presented the first award of the night, for Best Supporting Actress, which was given to Regina King.

5. Costume Party

Movie stars Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry presented this years award for best costume design. When the two actors took the stage though, it was no normal presentation. Melissa came out in a huge gown covered in adorable stuffed rabbits, complete with an enormous brimmed hat. Her co-presenter Brian Tyree Henry wore huge monochrome floral gown with a cute little hat to match.

Worst moments

1. Kevin Hart Scandal

Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting this year's Oscars because of a homophobic remark he posted on Twitter and the scandal that followed. Hart received a massive amount of backlash from the public when his past tweets resurfaced. I don’t believe Hart deserved the backlash he got. The tweets were from ten years ago and he apologized for them when they came out and hasn’t made any homophobic jokes since then. Because of this, there was no host this year.

2. Shallow Performance

Don’t get me wrong, the performance by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga was amazing, but it caught everyone’s attention for the wrong reasons. The chemistry the two had in the performance was incredible, but there was something about it that seemed a bit too real. Many speculated that there was something going on between the two and found it unsettling. Despite the phenomenal performance and flawless chemistry, you remember that, in the audience, are both of their significant others, watching what your watching. Obviously, Cooper and Gaga are in no way romantically involved, they are just convincing actors.

3. Best Picture

Green Book won this years Oscar for Best Picture. Granted, it was an incredible movie and definitely worthy of the win, however many are up in arms saying other movies deserved the title more. Spike Lee, the director of “Black Klansmen," openly shared his opinion on the academy’s decision saying “the ref made a bad call.” Green Book is an amazing movie, but it might as well have been called “Driving Miss Daisy 2." The academy notoriously snubbed Spike Lee back in 1998 when they gave the Oscar for Best Picture to “Driving Miss Daisy instead of Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.” Many think the academy took a huge step back in giving Green Book this years title.

4. Cut Short

Oscar organizers scrapped their plans to present awards during commercial breaks. Organizers wanted to cut the shows time length down so they figured they'd present some of the smaller awards during commercial breaks. They planned to show best cinematography, makeup/hair, short film, and editing during the breaks. Luckily, the academy abandoned this idea before the public got too angry.

5. Barbra Streisand Refuses to Present

Babs is an icon. She played Lady Gaga’s role in the original “A Star Is Born.” Many people were confused when it was announced Streisand was announcing Spike Lee’s “Black Klansmen” insead of the movie she had originally starred in. She was given a choice between the two, and even though she openly supports and adores both moves, she decided to go with Lee’s film because she believed that it was such a masterpiece that she had to present it. While people aren’t particularly mad at her, many are disappointed she did not introduce “A Star Is Born" because of her relationship to the film's history.
