Duolingo

If you’ve taken a foreign language class at Covina you've definitely used Duolingo, and have received at least one notification reminding you to continue learning your language. Professora Lopez introduced me to Duolingo when I took her spanish class last year. Me, being the wonderful student that I am, never actually use it. This means my phone is always flooded with the Duolingo Owl, Duo, telling me, “It’s time for your daily spanish lesson!”

This year Duo took to twitter and ended up scaring everybody with an image straight from my nightmares. The Duolingo owl standing at my door waiting for me, unless I complete my daily lesson. The app quickly responded with a light hearted video of Duo walking around the city and giving people friendly reminders to do their lessons.

Mcdonalds

Salty and sweet, one of the world’s best pairings. While many people hate it, there is a new trend of dipping french fries in milkshakes.

I find myself doing it all the time. McDonalds took note of this growing habit and announced their “shake sauce” as a joke. They made an a sauce for all four of their shake flavors: Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, and even Shamrock.

I had forgotten it was April Fool’s Day and fell for the joke. Still I wasn’t sure if I should be excited or grossed out. McDonalds lovers seem to have mixed feelings about the add as well. Many people are expressing their love for the idea, but I don’t think I could ever dip my fry in a bright green shake sauce.

Tinder

People often find themselves in awkward situations when they meet a Tinder date who looks nothing like their profile picture. Recently, the ladies of Tinder have found themselves meeting up with guys who are way shorter than what they had said on their profile. It’s been a running joke for awhile now, and Tinder decided to turn it into a pretty clever April Fool's joke. They advertised their new addition to the app, "height verification!" The ladies found it funny, but some men seemed a little annoyed at this gentle jest. Overall however, the April Fool's was well received.

Lego

If you’ve ever played with Legos you know how difficult it can be to find specific pieces. Some pieces are so small they cant get lost in the huge pile of Legos on your floor. This year, Lego took to social media to make fun of themselves. They announced a new app, “Find my Brick."

This fake app would allow you to point your camera at your pile of bricks and it would highlight the brick you are looking for. While this ad was obviously fake and no one fell for it, many took to the comment section to express how helpful this app would be if real. This app it a bit too far fetched to ever become a reality, but it sure would be useful. It was successful, however, in giving people a good laugh.

Australia

This prank was my favorite, mostly because the idea of Australia having it’s own Twitter account is funny in and of itself. The account posts a lot of native Australian wildlife and they played a trick on us with a little koala. The joke didn’t fool anyone as it was quite obvious the account of goofing around with their post: “It’s a little-known fact that some #koala joeys are born with leopard print fur.” It was a cute joke mentioning how some joeys are “blessed with such incredible fashion sense.” Although painfully obvious, it was hard not to smile at this wholesome comment.
