MoviePass: Unlimited Movies

New movies are come out weekly and sometimes it's difficult to be able to check out every single one of them with a tight budget. I know I have missed some films this year that I was really excited to see. With each new innovative film and ticket prices constantly rising, it's frustrating not to be able to see the films you want in the way they were meant to be seen. But what if I told you that the answer to this problem is already out there

The answer is MoviePass.

MoviePass is a movie subscription service founded in 2011 that has gone under the radar until recently. In August of last year, MoviePass announced a new subscription, costing only 9.95$ a month, that would allow anyone to view one movie per day in participating theaters. This caused a huge uproar for movie fans all over the country with subscriptions skyrocketing after the announcement. The amount of subscriptions overwhelmed the developers. They quickly ran out of cards and some people didn't get their cards even weeks after subscribing.

The public were furious that they were not receiving their cards, but with the unsuspecting amount of subscriptions what more could have happened. Not only that, but AMC theatres tried to get out of its contract with MoviePass. Even though MoviePass dropped its price, AMC would still receive the revenue it would normally make.

But that was not AMC’s problem. They were worried that the service was doomed to fail and that simply being associated with them would cause problems for them. After a while, AMC cooled off and continued business with MoviePass.

The way MoviePass works is quite simple. You get on the MoviePass app then you find a theatre near you and then you find the film you would like to view. Then, within 100 yards from the theater, order your tickets and pay with the MoviePass card that you receive in the mail. You are allowed one movie per day which means you can possibly watch 28-31 movies per month.

That being said I was pretty skeptical due to the cons of the app. To start off, the app only allows you to view standard 2D films, meaning you can not view any special format such as IMAX, 3D, or special screenings. This is difficult because there are so many films that are ideal to watch on IMAX. I love the movie watching experience that IMAX or Dolby theaters present. I would be more than happy to pay an extra 10 dollars a month for a subscription that includes special formats such as IMAX

Another issue is it's complicated terms of service. Because of the volatile status of MoviePass, the entire process can change at anytime, and they've already demonstrated this by threatening AMC Theaters.

Other issues are that you must be 100 yards within a theatre to check in which means you might be too late once you arrive. It also does not allow you to pre order purchases which causes conflict for those who want to preorder tickets for sell out premieres such as this year's Avengers: Infinity War. It also does not have an option to purchase more than one ticket for the family or a special someone.

I feel that most of these problems could be resolved as MoviePass expands. But if not, there's a chance that rival apps could start to appear that offer a better experience.

Even with all the issues, I decided to give it a try. So far I have been impressed by the service. It works like a charm and while I've had it, I've yet to face any problems. I was able to watch a movie a day for an entire week with no conflict. As someone who goes to the movies regularly this is a huge deal. Movie prices in my area range from $8 to $13 each and that's not even including the absurd prices of theater food.

The 10$ dollar subscription saved me a ton of money.

Another factor that should be mentioned is that if you are a member of AMC's Stubs program or any other theater subscription then you will still earn the points you would normally earn with the rewards program.

Overall, MoviePass is an easy to use app that helps save an eager moviegoer a good amount of cash. The positives of MoviePass outweigh the negatives. As of right now there are no better alternatives, so until a competitor finally comes out, then MoviePass is the best way to save money.

I recommend this service for film fans who love going to the movies and go more than once or twice a month.
