Serves 6 to 8

Baking Temperature: 425 degrees/ 350 degrees

Time: 10 minutes/ 30-40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3+ large Granny Smith apples, sliced

  • Basic Pastry dough for a 9-inch two-crust pie (see below)

  • 3/4-1 cup sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 3 tablespoons flour

9-inch two-crust pie:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 3/4 cup shortening

  • 6-7 tablespoons cold water

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Peel, core and cut the apples into 8ths and thinly slice the apple with either with a knife or with cheese grater. Estimate the right amount of apples by placing the pie dish in a plastic bag and putting the sliced apples into the plastic-covered dish. Once enough apples are sliced, set them aside for later in a large bowl.

Follow the instructions for making a Basic Pastry dough for a 9-inch two-crust pie. Take out the pastry dough from the refrigerator and roll out half of the dough into a round to fit in the pie pan. Cut around the edge of the pan allowing enough dough for making the crust.

Mix the sugar, salt, cinnamon, and flour in a large bowl. Spoon the sugar mixture onto the apples and mix together. Line the pie pan with layers of the sugary apples, keeping the apples piled towards the center of the pan.

Roll out the rest of the dough into a round and place on top of the pie. Trim the edges and crimp the edges. Using a fork, poke holes into the top of the crust. Place in the oven at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, and then lower the heat to 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Test with a skewer or toothpick to see if the apples are done. The crust will be slightly golden.
