Metazuki

History-

The Metazuki-Class was not just about filling up gaps (both in fleet positions and the map), but to take full advantage of 1st-Gen X-Tech and make at least three of the upcoming classes "Fast" designation ships that would easily outflank and outrun Klingon, Romulan, Kzinti, Lyran, the occasional Gorn or Elasi Pirate, Orion, ISC, and even simulator races (Teh ones the Federation developed, and had salvaged from Klingon Hulls: Britanian, Canadi'en, Hispaniolan, Francasi, Qari, Jeffersonian, Flivver), relying on Torpedo Firepower to pound the Enemy from two or more Facings into submission, supplemented by weaker than normal Beam Weaponry.

After a few glowing simulations, the Utopia Planitia Design Team began constructing this new project for a Fast Destroyer, dubbed "Metazuki", after an altered Nippon-Engrish name for some Tritanium-Equivalent Alloy War Machine, or "Mecha", from an old Earth Japanese Cartoon from the 2030s, a seemingly daring, sleek name for a new X-Ship. Doubtless someone, or number of individuals on the design team were diehard fans of such older material on Earth, and were mischievious in inserting their little Anime references, only occasionally appropriate to a serious, clinical, multi-national United Starfleet. Similar references to a certain author's Guide to the Galaxy, including Dolphins and the Number 42, were found and eliminated by Dr. Geoffrey Seuchen, infuriated by such "childish squirreliness".

In her shakedown cruiser, the USS Metazuki (NX-7221) was smooth, with oddly enough, no problems during Emergency Speed tests. After being commissioned, and a month of uneventful border patrol, the USS Metazuki discovered some odd, nebulous sensor readings. Tailing them for four days, and her Science Officer gradually fleshing out more of the Electronics and Engine Signature, it was discovered to be a damaged First Federation Starship, Neutrino-Class, and after some kind of Nova or some other Astronomical Phenomenae which damaged it badly, it was chased by two Klingon Scoutships (K-15) crewed by Klingon-Human Fusions, both ships eager to pin down and board the ship, capture it, and bring it's advanced 5X secrets to the Klingon Empire. The Metazuki used Hit-and-Run tactics to destroy one Scout Ship and make the other retreat, the Slothlike pilot of the Neutrino radioing his gratitude.

Since then, the Metazukis were a proud, only occasionally prominent part of Starfleet, often handling mundane patrol duties, picketing and Recon in Force during the General War, and they were the first to try and drive off the ISC when they were separating the warring Nations, and taking over several of their worlds. The Class was produced at Sol IV, Antares and Morena Shipyards at a combined rate of 9 per year.
