Solid Mechanics, Engineering Mathematics, Calculus, Mechanics of Material, Matrix Structural Analysis 

Course Description and Goals:

Introduce the basic formulation and application of Finite Element Method, including structural analysis, structural engineering and heat conduction

Schedule Type: 

1. Focus on explanation theory and derivation of equations 

2. Weekly assignment will help students completing the FEM program 

3. Encourage students to discuss during class

Week 1 Direct approach for truss analysis 

Week 2 Strong form and weak(variational) form in one-dimensional problems 

Week 3 Approximation functions for Finite Element Methods 

Week 4 Choice of weight function – weighted residual methods 

Week 5 One-dimensional finite element formulation 

Week 6 Natural coordinates and shape functions

Week 7 Isoparametric finite elements 

Week 8 Finite element formulation of multi-dimensional heat flow and elasticity 

Week 9 Midterm exam 

Week 10 Numerical integration and approximation properties 

Week 11 Finite Element formulation of beam 

Week 12 ~ Week 15 Examples and practice on ANSYS program
