If you are not in a project file to make changes it is best practice to Quit without saving to ensure any inadvertent changes you may have made are not saved.
Click on the purple R in top left corner, then Close.
Then select Do not save the project:
And then select Relinquish all elements and worksets.
This is critical. If you have touched anything in the project, even if you made no changes, Revit will have locked those objects.
If you don't Relinquish them NO-ONE WILL BE ABLE TO EDIT THEM until you open the project again and Relinquish them.
Done!
Safely out of Revit without causing any damage.
