Walls in Revit are rectangular in elevation by default.
It is possible to change the shape in elevation by editing a wall's profile.
Select a wall, the use Edit Profile tool.
Edit Profile can be used to create openings in walls (as shown in image above).
BUT this is often not the best way to create an opening.
Edited wall profiles can become unstable (e.g. doors disappear) when changes are made to the wall, or are made to other walls that join it.
If the wall has unlocked layers with different offsets problems can occur (see WALL OPENING HEAD CHANGES WHEN CHANGING WALL LAYERS)
If you are embedding something into a hole created by an edited profile, the hole won't change if the wall embedded object is changed.
ALTERNATIVES TO EDITING WALL PROFILES
There are other ways to create openings in walls which are more robust and a lot easier:
For rectangular openings use the Wall Opening tool:
To create an opening that matches an adjacent wall use the Join tool:
- for example when one wall has a door in it.
Note non-touching walls need to be closer than 152mm for this to work.
To embed one wall within another use use the Cut tool:
A wall can be 'embedded' within another wall by drawing the new wall within the host wall in plan, then use Cut tool to cut a hole in the host wall.
The embedded wall can have its profile edited and the hole will still match the embedded wall. And the wall can be a Curtain Wall.
