Hide all 3D elements in Plan views using V/G overrides.
Use Masking Regions to represent the family in plan.
Use Symbolic Lines for detail with any masking region.
Make masking regions parametric by locking lines of masking region to reference planes or underlying 3D elements.
Make sure lines used inside masking region are correct sub-category.
Masking regions will generally hide what is below, but sometimes they don't, or hide things you don't want to hide.
To control how masking regions hide untick Hide in Foreground.
Then host Masking Region on a Reference Plane higher the default Ref Plane (i.e above where family is hosted).
But no so high it hides things above it.
e.g. for a chair:
Create a Reference Plane at seat height, give it a name.
Host Masking Regions and Symbolic lines on this Reference Plane.
e.g. for a table:
Host Masking Regions and Symbolic lines on the Reference Plane where the table top is.
Then table will hide chairs, chairs will hide floor material patterns.
