PROBLEM:
You get an error message when you try and edit a structural element (columns, beams, structural floors, etc).
CAUSE:
Revit by default makes new structural elements (columns, beams, structural floors) part of an Analytical Model.
This connects structural elements together, so changing one may have an effect on some other connected element (or elements).
SOLUTION:
First try and remove the element you are editing from the Analytical Model.
Select the element and in its properties untick Enable Analytical Model.
If that doesn't work find the element causing the problem by expanding the error message and getting the ID of the element.
Use Manage tab, Select by ID to find it.
Once selected try and untick Enable Analytical Model.
If that doesn't work you will have to delete the element.
PREVENTION:
Don't use the Structure tab to create elements you can create from the Architecture tab.
e.g. Floors, walls, columns etc.
Don't create structural floors, walls, columns unless they actually are structural.
To prevent it happening again you can also remove Analytical Model from all elements.
Create a new 3D view of the whole project.
Using Visibility Graphics turn off everything except Analytical Model Categories
(if the tab is not there go to Options > User Interface, under Tools and analyses tick Structural analysis and tools).
Select everything.
Use Filter to select just one category.
In the Properties window select the underlying elements.
Untick Enable Analytical Model
Repeat for all other categories.
