Detailing in Revit is done by adding additional detail, or drawing over the top of, 3D model elements.
These model elements are typically shown cut, as in a plan or section.
You can control how 3D model elements are displayed in your callout view by using the view's Display Model parameter.
Normal = displayed according to Visibility/Graphics settings.
Halftone = displayed as grey
Do not display = don't show at all
If you are completely drawing over the top and not using 3D model elements, make the setting Halftone.
This ensures you are always aware of the model geometry the detail is based on, and any changes to 3D model elements will be obvious.
Leave it at this setting for check prints so others can see how the detail relates to the 3D model.
You can change the Display Model parameter of multiple callout views by selecting them in the Project Browser (hold Crtl key while selecting), and changing the parameter in the properties window.
