VERSION: 2011 (update 1)
PROBLEM:
Crash Protection message when trying to dimension in a Section, Elevation or section Call-out.
POSSIBLE CAUSE:
Section, Elevation or section Call-out is not perpendicular to objects in the view, usually grids.
Revit aligns sections and elevations to the nearest object when they are created – usually a wall. If that wall is nearly, but not exactly, perpendicular to other objects you are dimensioning to, Revit poos itself.
If the angle is greater (i.e. more than 1 degree) it doesn't seem to have the same problem.
SOLUTION:
Align offending objects.
Unfortunately there is no way to re-align a section or elevation.
Create new Sections, Elevations and section Call-outs.
Use View Templates to match view settings to old Sections, Elevations or section Call-outs.
Open each old Section, Elevation or section Call-out, copy drafting objects.
Paste into new Section, Elevation or section Call-out.
Delete old Sections, Elevations or section Call-outs.
HOW TO AVOID:
Draw accurately!
Don't trace over CAD files, or anything from Rhino.
Check grids are perpendicular before using them to create objects.
Check by creating a Dimension Type with custom units.
