A project can end up with literally hundreds of views. If these are not structured it can be nearly impossible to find you way around the project.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
Never make the Title of Sheet different from the View Name.
It is confusing if the view title on a printed drawing is different from the view name in Revit. Keep it simple.
STRUCTURING VIEWS
Define views with particular purposes. As a minimum create views for following purposes:
TEMP
Views created for a temporary reason, or views created by individuals to assist their work, but not required by any one else in the team.
WORKING
Views to assist working on the project that are shared by the team.
They help navigate the model; show certain things; for exporting; for duplicating to create new views.
VERIFICATION
Views where annotation is added to show that standards, codes and other requirements have been met.
For example a dimensioned view showing that disability code requirements have been met, or area plans showing minimum room ventilation. Schedules may also be used for verification.
MODEL MANAGEMENT
Views to assist managing the Revit model.
DOCUMENT
Views that are placed on sheets to create an issued document for the project.
PRESENTATION
Views that are used to create or contribute to presentations.
SKETCH
Views that are used to create sketches for printing or issuing.
RFI
Views that are used to respond to a builder's RFI (Request For Information).
Further descriptions and recommended practice can be found in STANDARD VIEW TYPES
SHEET VIEWS
Sheet views are used to created printed output.
Create a titleblock for your project from the appropriate titleblock family by editing it and saving it in your project family library.
It is important the title block is based on the standard family file so sheet schedule correctly (i.e. Sheet Lists).
Further descriptions and recommended practice can be found in SHEET VIEW SETUP
PROJECT BROWSER FILTERS
Views can be ordered and filtered by using Project Browser types.
Custom shared parameters are particularly powerful when doing this.
(refer to STANDARD VIEW TYPES and SHEET VIEW SETUP on how to set them up).
But Project Browser filters that use custom shared parameters will only be reliable if those shared parameters are FILLED IN CORRECTLY.
Regularly check custom shared parameters values of views in your project are correct. Set up and use schedules (i.e. View Lists & Sheet Lists) to do this.
