To get an understanding of the fundamentals of Design Options refer to CREATING DESIGN OPTIONS.
MOVING OBJECTS FROM MAIN MODEL to OTHER OPTIONS
Select the objects, then use the Add to Set command from Manage tab, Design Options tile.
By default this command adds the objects to ALL design options. Make sure you untick any of the options you DON'T want the objects to appear in. This includes any other Design Option Sets accessible via the drop down list.
MOVING or COPYING OBJECTS BETWEEN OPTIONS
The only way to to move objects between options is to Copy or Cut from the original design option and Paste Aligned to same place in to the other design option.
If you try and use the Add to Set command by ticking or unticking particular options you will get an error.
REMOVING OBJECTS IN AN OPTION
Use the delete command. Deleting objects within an option (expect for Main Model) will only remove them from that option. If the objects also appear in another option they are copies, and will still be there.
If you try and use the Add to Set command by unticking particular options you will get an error.
HOSTED FAMILIES (DOORS, WINDOWS)
Hosted elements by themselves can’t be put in to a Design Options, but must be hosted in an object within the current option.
If you try and use the Add to Set command by ticking or unticking particular options you will get an error.
By default Revit will bring any hosted object along with walls when they are Added to Set or copy and pasted between options. If you don't want the hosted objects just delete them in the option.
WALL JOINS
The Wall Joins command will work on objects across options, but you may not get a good result in all options.

ANNOTATION
Only model objects can live in an option. View dependent objects like text, dimensions, tags etc. can not be control with Design Options.
However, annotation that is dependent on model objects, like dimensions and tags, will be affected by whether there host objects are visible.
If you dimension walls that only exist in a particular design option, those dimensions will be grayed out, but usable, whilst in that option.
But they will not be visible in other options, or in any other views where that option has been made visible.
Refer to PRESENTING DESIGN OPTIONS for more information on including annotation when you present options.
