LINKED REVIT FILES
Linked Revit files may be created in-house (e.g. interiors), or they may be provided by others (e.g. structural engineer).
The naming standard for in-house linked Revit files can be found under STANDARDS > NAMING PROJECT FILES.
Linked Revit files from others follow the convention described under LINKED FILENAME FORMAT below.
LINKED CAD FILES
There are a number of reasons CAD files might be linked in to a Revit project:
to form part of the drawing set (e.g. context in a site plan)
as a temporary background to help modelling (e.g. a design drawing done in CAD)
as a reference background from other consultants. (e.g. civil CAD files)
DESIGN CAD FILES USED FOR REFERENCE
Put a copy of the CAD file in the project's LinkCAD folder (typically LinkCAD/JWA plot files) . Rename the copied CAD file with an X_ prefix, then a description it is of, include a date if relevant, and put the original source file name in brackets.
e.g.
X_L01-Option 4_150617_(TP_AR_PLA_L04).dwg
CAD FILES USED ON SHEETS
CAD files that form part of the drawing set will require cleaning up so a copy of the original is always made and edited. It is also important these files are in a stable folder so the link doesn't get broken.
Put a copy of the CAD file in the project's LinkCAD folder. Use the LINKED FILENAME FORMAT below.
CAD FILES FROM CONSULTANTS USED FOR REFERENCE
CAD files from consultants should have a copy placed in the project's appropriate LinkCAD folder (e.g LinkCAD/Electrical) and be renamed using the LINKED FILENAME FORMAT below.

OTHER SOFTWARE
Other software that connects to Revit may have restrictions on characters used in filenames.
Codebook
Codebook removes square brackets [ ] from Revit filenames so can not connect to revit files with square brackets in their name.
Excel Export/Importers
Excel doesn't allow square brackets [ ] in Excel filenames. Usually Excel will replace them with round brackets ( ), which may mean the connection between the Revit and excel file is lost.
