Things Invisible To See
Nancy Willard
Willard, Nancy. Things Invisible To See. Bantam Books. New York, New York. 1985.
Nancy Willard’s book, Things Invisible To See, was written in 1888 to deceive people’s minds. It is horrible because everything is predictable and it is supposed to be a comedy, but it is not funny at all. This book will sadly fill readers’ minds with childish mythology for eons to come.
The story of Things Invisible To See is about Brighton Early, an angel who likes to deceive the people of Earth with unusual illusions. The story takes place in 1941 during WWII in the small town of Hatchechubbee, Alabama where a young boy has a cold and is missing school. God sees this and sends his most trusted angel, Brighton to take care of this matter.
The first thing that Brighton does is ask the child for his name. “Chris Cross,” the boy replied. Soon enough, Brighton’s arch-nemesis, Dr. De Kay appeared and attacked Brighton with his magic Dying Pencil of Doom. After a long fight, Brighton gained the upper hand and interrogated De Kay for Dr. E. Ville’s hideout. De Kay replied, “I’ll tell you only if I can join you.” - “Huh? Why do you say that?” - “The Underworld would not pay my salary...I want to get my revenge.” - “Ok.”
On their journey, Brighton completely forgets about Chris Cross. Suddenly, they arrive at the Gates of Death where Dr. E. Ville lurks. Dr. De Kay starts beating up Dr. E. Ville with his pencil. Then Brighton shows up and kills Dr. E. Ville with a sword. Both warriors rejoice and start having a party, but then Chris Cross appears and curses them all to the Underworld.
Nancy Willard’s Things Invisible To See is a poor excuse of a story. It is not known how or why this book got published, but it does succeed on making reader’s lives horrible. Nancy Willard is truly the master author of terrible books.
